Battle Rounds Night 1

Battle Rounds Night 1

What a fantastic night of battle rounds on The Voice! Here's what happened in last night's heated battle!

Battle #1

Team Adam: Grey vs. Nic Hawk

Song: "Domino" by Jesse Jay

I immediately gravitated toward wedding singer, Grey over energetic Nic remembering her stunning performance of Kelly Clarkson during the blind audition. (I'm a sucker for perfect tone and big notes) But during the rehearsal process I really began to enjoy Nic's unique style - and who can resist his outlandish style! Both singers gave an incredible performance during the final battle.

Overall though, Grey was the better singer and ultimately won her spot with Team Adam. Nic, however, was swiftly scooped up by Blake (to which I am grateful because Nic has such a unique voice) on the condition that he teaches Blake how to dance.

Battle #2

Team Christina: Amber Nicole vs. Timyra Joi

Song: "Listen" by Beyonce

Christina could not have picked a better song for the two powerhouse teens 17-year-old Amber Nicole and 15-year-old Timyra-Joi! Both girls soared through the high notes and rifts in an incredibly moving performance (Chills. Multiple times.) even moving their coach to tears.

I was pulling for Timyra-Joi. Her deep and soulful talent struck a chord with me over the technically perfect Amber Nicole, but Christina chose Amber. In her final interview during the battle Christina pointed out how young Timyra-Joi's voice is and needs time to develop over Amber's. (a true statement) Surprisingly though, no one decided to steal Timyra.

Battle #3

Team Blake: Justin Chain vs. Shelbie Z.

Song: "Don't You Wanna Stay" by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson

A Kelly Clarkson tune is something not all singers can handle - and right off the bat Shelbie had trouble supporting the high notes. Both she and Justin also struggled with the harmonies.

Eventually though, they worked through the song and delivered a stellar performance - one that left Adam howling "yeehaw!" Shelbie was the winner with her impressive high notes (which still need a bit of work if you ask me) outshining Justin's country twang. No one decided to steal.

Battle #4

Team Ceelo: Anthony Paul vs. Caroline Pennell

Song: "As Long As You Love Me" by Justin Bieber

Show choir singer Anthony Paul was initially excited by Ceelo's song choice but shy student Caroline Pennell (who by the way, was not familiar with the song. Finally! A teen without Bieber Fever!) took the song and made it her own in a way that impressed both Ceelo and mentor, Miguel.

Anthony was technically perfect but Caroline brought a unique style and emotion that ultimately won over the judges. Luckily, Anthony was saved by Christina! (Whew! He's great!)

Battle #5

Team Adam: Donna Allen vs. Tessanne Chin

Song: "Next to Me" by Emeli Sande

Jamaican singer Tessanne was immediately out shined by 54-year-old Donna in rehearsal leading us to believe her timidness would carry over to the final battle. But it was Donna who drew back delivering a wonderful performance, yet not nearly as outlandish as we saw in the rehearsal.

Tessanne was chosen by Adam and Donna was shockingly sent packing with no one stealing her!

Battle #6

Team Christina: Briana Cuoco vs. Jacquie Lee

Song: "The House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals

Personal assistant Briana and 16-year-old student Jacquie were evenly matched in rehearsal but Briana quickly outshined Jacquie who came on too strong during the performance even after Christina's notes to pull back.

Briana seemed the obvious choice but in a shocking twist Christina chose Jacquie as the winner. Almost immediately both Ceelo and Blake pushed their steal buttons sending Briana to the next round. Briana chose team Blake because "he's won three times in a row."
